Staehle Institutional Accomplishments in Corrosion


  1. Edited Corrosion Journal 1971-1979.
  2. Edited 23 books on corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, passivity, and corrosion fatigue.
  3. Built the Fontana Corrosion Center at Ohio State to a staff of 40 people including graduate students, post-doctoral students, collaborators, technicians and office staff.
  4. Obtained $1M yearly commitment from DOE for funding and maintaining the Corrosion Center at University of Minnesota starting in 1979.
  5. Co-organized and co-directed the Corrosion Advisory Committee for the Electric Power Research Institute in 1974 through 1980.
  6. Organized the first corrosion exchange with the Soviet Union in 1975.
  7. Organized the first U.S.-Japan collaborative meeting on corrosion in 1975 on Passivity of Iron.
  8. Organized with R. A. Rapp while at Ohio State first program of lecture-laboratory short courses in corrosion for industry.
  9. Organized 10 major international conferences on corrosion and related subjects.
  10. Organized the first review series on corrosion, Advances in Corrosion Science and Technology, with Plenum Press.
  11. Presented the U.S. Plenary Lectures in Amsterdam, Sydney, and Tokyo at the quadrennial International Conferences on Corrosion 1969-1976.
  12. Students and post-doctoral workers have become senior academic leaders at MIT, Case Western Reserve, University of Hokkaido, University of Osaka, Tohoku University, Wonsai University.
